Start your adventure in the artistic town of Kirkcudbright before venturing into the highlands. Spend two nights in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, where history and culture abound.

Journey to the northernmost point of mainland Britain, John O’Groats, and immerse yourself in its rugged coastal beauty. Then, escape to the tranquil beaches of Achmelvich and the serene landscapes of Big Sand.

Experience the raw beauty of Applecross and its scenic coastal drives. Then head to Portree on the Isle of Skye for two nights, where stunning seascapes and quaint charm await.

Continue to the dramatic valleys of Glencoe, steeped in history and natural grandeur, for two nights of exploration in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.

Next, spend two nights in Edinburgh, Scotland’s historic and vibrant capital, rich in heritage and culture.

Roadtrip Start!

When picking up your chosen vehicle you have the option to leave your car parked at our gated depot in Leeds for an extra fee.

Your first stop in Kirkcudbright which is 3.5 hour drive from Leeds. So before you set off make a stop to grab some snacks and get a the perfect roadtrip playlist ready!

Kirkcudbright - 1 Night

Surrounded by outstanding beauty of coasts and hills Kirkcudbright (Pronounced kir–coo–bree) is a lively fishing port with an amazing community. There’s plenty to do from hikes to having a relaxed day at the beach. Kirkcudbright has plenty going on throughout the year with events, exhibitions, and plenty of activities so you won’t be short of finding something to do while your there.

Then it’s on to Inverness, now this will be the longest journey of your trip so get stocked up and prepared for the 5 hour drive through the stunning drive up through Scotland. 

Inverness - 2 Night

Inverness the capital of the Highlands has a lot to offer you can explore the city or use it as a base to explore the Highlands. Take a trip out to the iconic Loch Ness which is a 30-minute drive from Inverness and see if you can spot the Loch Ness Monster! You have 2 nights here plenty of time to relax after the long drive and do some exploring. 

Your next stop right at the most northeastern point of the country. John O’Groats is a 3 hour drive from Inverness but you won’t be short of a view with this drive and maybe make a stop or two on your journey and see what the area has to offer or stop at some of our recommended places to visit on the route map. 

John O'Groats - 1 Night

John O’Groats a Highland village with stunning scenery. With plenty to do like exploring the village, enjoying the wildlife, or a walk along the coastal paths. It’s also 11 miles from Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland Britain were you can also do a bit of bird spotting and if you’re lucky and get there between 7am – 10am you might have a better chance of seeing some Puffins!

Achmelvich is a 3.5 hour drive from John O’Groats on the quickest route but if you don’t mind adding on some time we recommend either a longer route through or a detour to Kylesku Bridge. This bridge was designed with a curve to blend into the landscape and it offers some breathtaking views! There are also plenty of viewing points to pull over and take it all in. 

 

Achmelvich - 1 Night

Achmelvich Bay a small collection of beaches nestled between rocky bays and headlands. These white sandy beaches are accessible by a single-track road but don’t be discouraged it’s worth it when you get there for the scenery alone! This spot is really popular for water sports so if you fancy a little windsurfing why not give it a go? However if water sports isn’t your thing, then the area as some beautiful walks to offer instead.

If you like a hike and wouldn’t mind stopping on your journey to Big Sand, you can make a little detour to Stac Pollaidh. Where you will witness incredible scenery on your hike up, when you reach the ridge you will be rewarded with the most wonderful panoramic views that go on for miles.

Big Sand - 1 Night

Big Sand beach was awarded rural seaside award in 2004, Big Sand can be accessed through a network of sand dunes which offers you shelter from the brisk Scotish winds. If you are after a day on the beach, you’ve got it, so have a paddle and build a sand castle make the most of it! While this beach is remote there are facilities and a shop at the campsite which is just opposite the beach. 

Your drive to Applecross is a short 2 hours so relax take your time and enjoy the scenery while you listen to some music. You will also want to take a little detour to the Glen Docherty viewpoint, it’s a view you defiantly don’t want to miss! A short detour from Kinlochewe along the A832 towards Achnasheen you’ll find a view point located on a small hill where you can take in the beauty. 

Apple Cross - 1 Night

Applecross is a remote peninsula in Wester Ross with an incredible drive to get there. You’ll have plenty to explore in Applecross between the beaches and the heritage center. Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast, a wildlife watcher, or just someone looking to escape the bustle of city life, Applecross offers a unique, laid-back experience.

On your way to Portree is Eilean Donan castle which is somewhat of a Scottish icon. It’s located on its own island where 3 lochs meet. Even if you don’t go into the historic castle the view of the island surrounded by the lochs and hills is certainly worth a brief stop.

Portree - 2 Night

Portree is located on the east side of Skye surrounded by hills and the largest town and capital of the Isle of Skye. Further north is a popular walk called Old Man of Storr so you may want to grab your walking boots for that one. Compared to the last few stops there’s more to explore within the village if you fancy a day of cafes, shopping and even a movie at the cinema Portree has it all. 

On your way to Glencoe is Glenfinnan Viaduct famous in it’s own right but most well known from being in the Harry Potter movies. It wouldn’t be a roadtrip around Scotland without a stop here.

Glencoe - 2 Night

Glencoe one of Scotland’s most famous places known for its beauty, with deep valleys and towering mountains formed by volcanic activity and glaciers. You may even recognise it from the backdrop of movies such as Braveheart and Skyfall. There’s a lot to explore in your short stay here plenty of history, wildlife, and adventures to be had. 

After your 2 nights in Glencoe it’s time to head to Edinburgh you also have 2 nights here so plenty of time to explore the city.

Edinburgh - 2 Night

While you won’t be staying directly in the city, you’ll only be a short drive away. So, this is your opportunity to spend some time in the famous city of Edinburgh. You won’t be short of anything to do here so treat yourself a little since you’ve been road tripping hard for a week! 

After a little city break in Edinburgh it’s onto Keswick in the Lake District leaving you a little closer to Leeds so you don’t have to rush back on your last day.

Keswick - 1 Night

Your last stop on this roadtrip is Keswick, the Journey from Edinburgh back to Leeds is a long one so the 2.5-hour journey from Keswick to Leeds is a bit nicer for your last day of driving. So, take it easy have a nice breakfast and enjoy the drive back.

Hike Stac Pollaidh

Stac Pollaidh, also known as Stac Polly, is a mountain in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. It’s known for its unique and dramatic rocky crest. A Scenic Route: Kylesku Bridge

Taking the scenic route to Kylesku Bridge in Scotland is a worthwhile journey, offering a blend of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and natural beauty. The route typically involves travelling through some of the most picturesque parts of the Scottish Highlands. This striking bridge, opened in 1984, spans the narrow strait of Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin and offers spectacular views of the surrounding waters and mountains. The bridge is a piece of modern engineering art, blending beautifully with the natural landscape. Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic and picturesque castles, is located on a small tidal island at the point where three sea lochs meet: Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. The castle is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and is near the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan Castle, with its rich history and stunning location, embodies the quintessential image of a Scottish Highland castle and is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Scotland.

About The Hartley Package

The Hartley Package is incredibly special, we think it’s full of pure adventure, sights and experiences that you’ll enjoy throughout.

This package is not only an amazing adventure, but it was created in memory of Dominic Hartley, an Adventurous young man who sadly & suddenly passed away in June 2023. In April 2023 Dominic along with his friend Bradley, brother Reide and girlfriend Paris set of on a trip around Scotland, this trip is now named the Hartley Package! 

With our VW Luxe Campervan ‘Apollo’ and an incredible itinerary that took them around some wonderful hidden gems in Scotland, Dominic’s itinerary was created. Thanks to Dominic and his friend Bradley we are offering this awesome adventure so other people can enjoy and discover the beauty and fun that Scotland has to offer.

With each booking from the Hartley Package we will donated 5% to the Leeds Hospitals Charity in honour of Dominic.
