Begin your walk from Bolton Abbey through the Valley of Desolation to Simon’s Seat. The walking route through the Moors takes you past a beautiful waterfall before reaching the summit at Simon’s Seat. At the summit, you’ll be treated to some incredible views of Skyreholme and Wharfedale. Depending on the route you take you might also pass Grimwith Reservoir and Troller’s Gill.
Starting at the priory, tip-toe across the stepping stones to begin the walking trail along the River Wharfe. Stroll through the fields and across the stream where you’ll arrive at Cavendish Pavilion where you can stop for a bite to eat before continuing your walk through Strid Wood. This riverside path leads to the ruins of the 11th century fortress, Barden Tower. From here, choose from a variety of designated nature trails for you return to the Priory.
Legend has it that the limestone ravine at Troller’s Gill is home to a black spectral hound, capable of turning people to stone along with boggarts, imps and pixies. Starting in Applewick, the path takes you pasta series hidden caves, limestone cliffs and woodlands full of wildflowers. If you have time, take a detour via Parcevall Hall and Gardens. Spend some time exploring the rose garden and rock garden or take a well deserved break at the tea room.
The market village of Grassington is just a short drive away from your base in Bolton Abbey. The main street is lined with traditional Yorkshire pubs, cafes and hotels ready to welcome you after a brisk walk in the dales. There’s no shortage of celebrations in this town with the Grassington Festival taking place in June, the Dickensian Festival in December and a 1940s themed weekend in September. If you’re shopping for something unique to take away from your visit, make sure to check out the independent craft shops or ‘The Wine Shop’ which sells a range of quirky Yorkshire bottled beers.
The route from Bolton Abbey to Skipton is an incredibly pleasant cycling trail that guides you along the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Along the way you can stop off at Yorkshire Dales Ice cream for a farmhouse creation or, for something a bit different, take a break at Billy Bob’s ice cream Parlour for a 1950s American diner experience.
