There’s a couple of ways to get to the village of Applecross, but if you’re more about the journey than the destination then we’d definitely recommend taking the Bealach Na Ba Road over.
First of all it’s worth mentioning that this is a tricky road to navigate, so if you’re not the most confident of drivers, conditions are a bit icey, or you’re in a large vehicle like a motorhome, then it might be a better idea to take the coastal route around the mountains. It should go without saying too, but don’t take this route if it’s dark, not only are you making it 10 times harder for yourself, but you’re missing out on the amazing views which is what this road all the worth while!
Starting at the bottom of the climb, you’re filled with a sense of excitment and not quite sure what to expect. The road up twists and turns so much, it doesn’t offer any spoilers as to where it will lead you or what your viewpoint will be. Take it easy as you go, use the stopping places – they’ll give you a chance to glance back as admire the ever-improving scenary!
Where you near the summit, one last sharp corner and steep bend is all what will seperate you, there’s enough room for a dozen or so vehicles to park up and take in all what is around you. We’ve purposefully not filled this article with images and videos as they simply don’t do it enough justice.
The view between the valley is breathtaking, and you can see the snaking road of which you made your approach up – have a wander onto the rocks and marshland to get the perfect angle, but make sure you turn around! The views here are panoramic, so you’ll have fantastic coastal views too and a sneak peak at where you’ll be heading as you head down.
If you’re blessed with the weather, this is, without doubt, one of the most incredible things you’ll do and see throughout the whole of the North Coast 500; so make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy it properly. When you get to Applecross, there’s a couple of cafes you can refuel on, as well as watersports when in-season.
We love this drive so make sure you send us your pics!
